I'll let you into a secret. The people that actually do the 'hands on' technical work in a digital marketing agency are often very thin on the ground.
They often have too many clients to handle, with a focus on getting things done quickly rather than getting the best results possible.
For any dedicated and conscientious digital marketer this can be a frustrating experience.
Top Heavy
Digital marketing agencies will often be 'top heavy' with account managers and sales staff often out numbering those who are technically able. They need to be to cope with the ongoing 'churn' of clients.
This means inevitably a large chunk of your budget will be spent on paying the wages of these staff.
This is a product of the whole 'digital marketing agency' concept/structure.
The slickest aren't the best
You may of course be able to find an agency that has a more reasonable balance of employees, however how do you know which?
The agencies with the slickest, most convincing "sales patter" and account managers are usually spending the most money on these staff. This means the agencies that appear the 'best' may actually be (in terms of value) some of the worst.
It doesn't take much effort to guess how much of a £1000 monthly budget actually gets spent on staff hours actively working to grow your leads and sales.
